Is Email Really in Danger Because of Social Media? | WebProNews

Is Email dying at the hands of social networks and texting? Tell us what you think.

"Overall, when you look at how many teens have ever sent an e-mail, it's most of them, so it's still being used," said Amanda Lenhart, senior research specialist with the Pew Internet Project. "It just isn't used for communicating with people you're primarily communicating with in your life, namely your friends, and it's absolutely true that text messaging and messaging through social networks has supplanted e-mail messaging to friends."

People might turn more and more to social networks for casual conversations, link sharing, and things like that, but call me when your banking and all your professional communicating are done through Facebook. In fact, call me when you receive notifications from all the social media sites you participate on are sent to your Facebook account (unless you count Facebook's new email service). The jury's still out on Facebook's new messaging system, but let's not forget, it launched with Facebook.com email addresses.

Is mobile killing email? Not so much. Recent data, also from comScore finds that mobile email usage is seeing significant growth

Mobile-email

Email will continue to evolve, but it's not going away - at least not in the foreseeable future. If social media's going to kill email, it's going to have to do a lot better than what it does so far.

If anything, social (along with mobile) is helping email.

Do you still send email? I know I certainly do. This is an interesting article that asks if emailing is dying because of social networks and texting.

What colour should you be wearing?

Colour blocking is a hot trend for spring/summer 2011 - but what colour should you be wearing to match your personality? Find out here.

A red high heel from a selection at Schuh(Schuh)

It's every woman's worst nightmare... the killer on-trend stilettos sit before her, they're the right price, the right size, but they come in a selection of colours: red, black or green - which colour should she buy? From shoes and handbags, to bedding and wallpaper, we have so much choice of colour and with trends changing from season to season, it's hard to keep up. So how do we know what colour to choose?

Aside from fashion, colours can tell us a lot about a person; are they productive and playful, or ambitious and creative? Logitech has teamed up with leading lifestyle expert, Paul Darby, to help teach us what colours say about us and how we can use them in the clothes we wear to positively influence our mood, productivity and general wellbeing.

Whats your favourite colour? Apparently colour blocking is the latest trend this season.

House price winners and losers

House prices boomed for much of the 2000s. Here, we reveal the areas where house prices rose the most - and the least - during the decade

Property prices 2011: the risers and the fallers(Image: Gareth Fuller - PA Photos)

Property prices in the UK almost doubled during the last decade - despite the recent house price crash - according to new data.

The typical home's value soared by a massive 91% - or £78,000 - between 2000 and 2010, according to the Halifax, meaning the average home jumped from £86,095 to £164,310.

But the rate of growth differs drastically when you look at the data on a regional level. Here, we reveal the areas where house prices have risen the fastest - and the slowest - over the decade.

Note that house price rises are calculated as a percentage change rather than an actual sterling increase.

How much is your house worth today? This article looks at the areas where house prices rose the most in the 2000s.

Google versus Facebook – does it matter? « Jonathan Leger

2Jan/11212

Google versus Facebook – does it matter?

We all knew it was going to happen, and it finally has: in 2010 Facebook overtook Google as the most visited site in the United States, receiving 8.9 percent of all US web traffic versus Google's 7.2 percent.

Does it matter? Do we all need to run out and start optimizing Facebook pages and buying Facebook ads to take advantage of this? Is all of that Search Engine Optimization going to come to nothing?

Let me start by saying that of course it matters. As people who market our businesses online, it's important that we understand the shifting tides of Internet traffic because we need to get some of that traffic to sell our products and earn our advertising revenue. So it's important that you start analyzing Social media to see if it should have a place in your traffic-building efforts.

Read that last sentence again: it's important that you start analyzing Social media to see if it should have a place in your traffic-building efforts. Social media is not the best place to advertise just any kind of product or service.

This is an interesting article that asks if marketers should now turn to facebook instead of google.

Radiating Love To You

Do You Have Time to Love ?

The greatest gift you can offer loved ones is your true presence.

To love, in the context of Buddhism, is above all to be there.
But being there is not an easy thing. Some training is necessary, some practice. If you are not there, how can you love? Being there is very much an art, the art of meditation, because meditating is bringing your true presence to the here and now. The question that arises is: Do you have time to love?

I know a boy of twelve whose father asked him one day: "Son, what would you like for your birthday present?" The boy did not know how to answer his father, who was a very rich man, able to buy anything for his son. But the boy did not want anything except his father's presence. Because the role the father played kept him very busy, he did not have time to devote to his wife and children. Being rich is an obstacle to loving, When you are rich, you want to continue to be rich, and so you end up devoting all your time, all your energy in your daily life, to staying rich. If this father were to understand what true love is, he would do whatever is necessary to find time for his son and his wife.

The most precious gift you can give to the one you love is your true presence. What must we do to really be there? Those who have practiced Buddhist meditation know that meditating is above all being present: to yourself, to those you love, to life.

So I would propose a very simple practice to you, the practice of mindful breathing:

"Breathing -- I know that I am breathing in;
breathing -- I know that I am breathing out."

If you do that with a little concentration, then you will be able to really be there, because in our daily life our mind and our body are rarely together. Our body might be there, but our mind is somewhere else. Maybe you are lost in regrets about the past, maybe in worries about the future, or else you are preoccupied with your plans, with anger or with jealousy.
And so your mind is not really there with your body.

Between the mind and the body, there is something that can serve as a bridge. The moment you begin to practice mindful breathing, your body and your mind begin to come together with one another. It takes only 10 to 20 seconds to accomplish this miracle called oneness of body and mind. With mindful breathing, you can bring body and mind together in the present moment, and every one of us can do it, even a child.

The Buddha left us an absolutely essential text, the Anapanasati Sutta, or Discourse on the Practice of Mindful Breathing. If you really want to practice Buddhist meditation, you must study this text.

If the father I was talking about had known that, he would have begun to breathe in and breathe out mindfully, and then one or two minutes later, he would have approached his son,
he would have looked at him with a smile, and he would have said this:

"My dear, I am here for you."

This is the greatest gift you can give to someone you love.

In Buddhism we talk about mantras. A mantra is a magic formula that, once it is uttered, can entirely change a situation, our mind, our body, or a person. But this magic formula must be spoken in a state of concentration, that is to say, a state in which body and mind are absolutely in a state of unity. What you say then, in this state of being, becomes a mantra.

So I am going to present to you a very effective mantra, not in Sanskrit or Tibetan, but in English:

"Dear one, I am here for you."

Perhaps this evening you will try for a few minutes to practice mindful breathing in order to bring your body and mind together. You will approach the person you love and with this mindfulness, with this concentration, you will look into his or her eyes, and you will begin to utter this formula:

"Dear one, I am really here for you."

You must say that with your body and with your mind at the same time, and then you will see the transformation.

Do you have enough time to love?
Can you make sure that in your everyday life you have a little time to love? We do not have much time together; we are too busy. In the morning while eating breakfast, we do not look at the person we love, we do not have enough time for it. We eat very quickly while thinking about other things, and sometimes we even hold a newspaper that hides the face of the person we love. In the evening when we come home, we are too tired to be able to look at the person we love.

We must bring about a revolution in our way of living our everyday lives, because our happiness, our lives, are within ourselves.

By Thich Nhat Hanh From "True Love" © 2004.

How many of us can say we are really here in the present moment? Try the above exercises to be here in the moment.

Are these the world's safest destinations?

A recent survey reveals the top 10 places that British travellers feel most safe in. Do you agree?

Danish girls in Copenhagen(Tariq Mikkel Khan_PA)

We might assume that safety on holiday refers to a country's stability - the on-going turmoils in Egypt and Tunisia being a case in point - but a recent survey reveals otherwise. Online travel agency sunshine.co.uk asked nearly 3,000 British holidaymakers where they feel most and least safe, based on holidays over the last three years. The results are surprising to say the least - popular destinations like Dubai and Thailand made the 'least safe' list.

It just goes to show that, despite some evidence to the contrary, we have our own ideas of safety - whether it's the rickety budget airplane, that shady man propping up your hotel bar or the sheer ease with which you can travel around a country.

So where do you feel most comfortable? Read on for the countdown of top 10 places that most travellers felt safe in, and tell us what you think.

Have you booked your holidays yet? What holiday destinations do you think are the safest?

Charles and Camilla to be protected by Taser guns -  UK News - MSN News UK

Charles and Camilla to be protected by Taser guns

Royal protection officers were left embarrassed last year when demonstrators opposed to university tuition fees attacked the car carrying her and Prince Charles to the Royal Vareity Show. A window was broken, Camilla was poked with a stick and protestors chanted: "Off with their heads!"

Police were powerless to act: while the team protecting the royal family do carry firearms, a code means their use must be "strictly proportionate" and only to protect the family from "violence which poses a real and immediate risk to life".

Non-lethal Taser stun guns, on the other hand, can be deployed rather more liberally. With an effective range of 21 feet, the devices deliver a powerful and immobilising electric shock of 50,000 volts to a target.

And the decision has now been taken to issue the electric devices to members of the Diplomatic Protection Squad, the group charged with safeguarding the royals and other bigwigs.

One former royal protection officer, Ken Wharfe, told the Sunday Telegraph that he thought the idea was ill-advised, saying he feared it would just confuse officers faced with split-second decisions on which weapon to draw.

What do you think of Charles and Camilla? Are you a royalist or not? Anyway they are now going to be protected by Taser guns.

How to Train Your Dog to Sit

Tips for Training Your Dog to Sit

Sitting is one of the most important tricks to train your dog, as well as being one of the easiest. Some dogs may not like coming, some might want to follow you when you want them to stay, and some are too rambunctious to want to lie down when you are trying to train them to do the tricks, but sitting is surprisingly easy to train your dog to do. If you dog were to get away from you and be running right towards the path of an oncoming car, as long as your dog reliably knows how to sit, you may very well save your dog's life by calling out "sit!".

Do you need some help and advice on training your dog to sit? If so this webpage could be helpful.

Testing the Fair Use Balance | WebProNews

Remember Righthaven? That's the company with the business model of suing bloggers over copyright that ignited one of the more recent fair use controversy debates. A report last month from Fortune about the company asked questions like: "Could clicking a Like button lead to a lawsuit?" and "Are the days of posting stories to Facebook, emailing articles to friends, or printing out pieces numbered?" and suggested that social media could be "maimed". For further context read our previous coverage here and here

Are you concerned with how others use your own content? Let us know

While we even found that to be a bit sensational at the time, words from Copyright Clearance Center Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary Frederic Haber seem to confirm that. He shared some commentary on the subject with WebProNews.

When asked whether he though social media sharing and emailing of articles was in jeopardy, his response was: "In jeopardy from copyright?  No, copyright helps make all of that possible. Without copyright, it's much less likely that either the software or the articles would have existed to be shared. Users have always shared materials that they read or experienced and wanted to bring to the notice of their friends and social circles, and copyright has never stopped that; on the other hand, going into the publishing business by distributing other people's creations to strangers with whom you have no connection rather than creating things yourself is another matter."

"Social media sharing between friends or within social circles shouldn't impede publishers' and creators' ability to profit from their content, and neither should wider sharing of focused selections where the person doing the sharing is actually saying something like 'look how great this is!' or 'can you believe that he said this?' Then the person doing the sharing is actually making a contribution to society, even if in only a small way, and that is exactly the kind of thing that fair use protects. Simply making a copy in order to save someone else from having to buy her own is something else."

This is an interesting article regarding Fair Use and how other people use your content. I think sharing other people's interesting content is good as long as you don't try and make out it's your own work and link back to them.

Weird February Holidays To Celebrate

President's Day

February 21st

type=text
Presidents Day is a pretty complicated one. It's a federal holiday, I can tell ya that much. It seems to have originated with a power struggle between celebrating President Lincoln and President Washingtons birthdays, although different states have different definitions and some people believe it's a day to celebrate all the United States Presidents. And theres a bunch of hullabaloo about the actual date...So yeah...
But hey, it's also the day when all the local car dealerships have those nifty "Presidents Day" sales!
February 21st is President's Day.

String Games and String Figures

String Games and String Figures

My daughter and her friends are having fantastic fun doing string games (also known as string figures) which seems to be the latest craze at school. Although I had a vague recollection of performing things like the Cat's Cradle and Jacobs Ladder myself in the school yard I did not feel equipped to deal with the inevitable queries for help. This lens is for all you parents who need to brush up on your skills and any budding enthusiasts.

Below are the best resources I found to set you on your way. Our string has been with us in cars and on planes to a large number of destinations because of its obvious portability attractions. String games/string figures are best suited for kids age 6 and up.

Do you remember playing string fingers when you were a child. I know I do - my mum taught me and I used to love it.

One of the most familiar dabbling ducks in the world, the mallard is brilliantly colored and easily adapts to living in different environments, including in close contact with humans. Mallards are also one of the most popular ducks for hunting.

This is an interesting article about the top 10 birds in 2010. What a dull place our world would be without our beautiful wild birds.
