Plea to feed Strathclyde Park Loch birds

A LANARKSHIRE couple have asked residents across the county to help them feed wildlife at Strathclyde Park this winter.

Frances and Alan McKnight spend over an hour each day shredding vegetables to feed to the swans, ducks, geese and coots.

The birds are struggling to find food in the extreme winter conditions, which has left much of the park loch frozen over. As a result, they rely heavily on being fed to help them survive.

And the couple, from Motherwell, are urging people to help.

Frances told the Advertiser: “We have been feeding the pond birds in Strathclyde Park for the last two winters due to the freezing conditions. The majority of the loch is frozen over and it is very difficult for the birds to find food.

“Few people venture down the park in this weather and fewer still bring bread to feed the birds so they really are suffering.

“The birds are also mostly at the sandy beach side, opposite the water centre. Very few people venture over there at this time of year, so we would love to see more people help by going along and feeding them as we do.”

So far this year the couple have rescued four swans from the loch, one of whom unfortunately died at the weekend on the way to the RSPCA centre in Hamilton.

Frances continued: “Some of the birds are stranded out on the ice, frozen on to it. Already we have rescued four swans, including signets.

There is no time nor distance in the spirit...so it can hard to judge how long an encounter is, and since there is no time or distance in the spirit, going there again is only a matter of going-in-the-spirit. We are spirits, we have a soul (a will), we live in an earthly body.

Residents asked to spare a thought for birds (From Kidderminster Shuttle)

NATURE lovers are being asked to spare a thought for wild birds during the cold winter.

Michael Darvill, head gardener at Arley Arboretum, said people could help native and visiting birds by feeding them and providing water in the freezing weather.

“Even the smallest space can be used to help out our wild birds and you don't need to buy expensive or specialist equipment,” he explained.

“You can use an old table as a bird feeder and should you happen to have the bones left over from a Sunday leg of lamb or other roast, just hang them in the trees.

“Many birds will be delighted with the scraps left, and it will provide them with enough calories to stay warm, even if it looks a bit odd to the neighbours.”

How does your mistletoe grow?

Many people decorate their houses with mistletoe at Christmas time and it provides a good excuse for a cheeky kiss. But do you know how much this festive evergreen relies on bird poo?

Unlike money, mistletoe grows on trees. It is a parasite, living off the nutrients and water in the tree that it grows on. You can find mistletoe growing on the branches of hawthorns, apple trees, poplars, limes and conifers. Although mistletoe is poisonous for humans, it doesn't kill the trees that it grows on and doesn't harm them if it's managed properly.

But how does mistletoe get up into tree branches to start growing in the first place?

I discovered the kalimba when I visited with my family "the Pueblito de Los Dominicos" in Santiago de Chile (a beautiful craft fair, where you can find almost anything). It was there, in the shop of a luthier. Some were of different shapes (square, rectangular and round), sizes (small, medium and large) and materials (wood and gourd).
Just saw it; I knew it was mine, round, pumpkin, medium size with red border. I took it in my hands and the artisan told me how to play it. Since then, whenever I have time, I enjoy make it sound: magical, relaxing, sweet and melodious.

When my wife and I decided to take up wedding photography a few years back I had a good idea of how much we would need to learn. I knew reading one book on wedding photography wouldn’t cut it but it was a place to start. I recall the book stating that for weddings you should be in aperture mode so off we went to shoot our first wedding for a friend. After shooting most of the ceremony in aperture mode I quickly realized there was a lot more to it when I saw the soft and blurry images from low shutter speeds due to the low lighting in the church. I knew we had a long ways to go.

The first day of advent

As we traipse down a snowy driveway to the Big House, our thoughts are on a poignant funeral service for a friend.

A cold church, puffs of steam coming from people's mouths and noses as they sing Amazing Grace, a floral tribute that says 'Mum', a tolling bell and memories of a feisty, fun and pint-sized woman loved by all who knew her. The church is packed with villagers, in big coats and warm hats. They stand in the pews: Caruso, Princess Peach, the Popes, the Parson's Daughter, Nobby Odd-Job, Mamma Mia, Mr and Mrs Sheepwash and Mrs Bancroft. There is Night Nurse beside the Loveliest Lady in the Village, there is Posh Totty and Mr F Word and Camilla and Mr and Mrs Putter. The church is so full that Tuppence and Ding Dong Daddy and his wife have to sit in the choir stalls, just steps away from our departed friend.

Nature and wild life are my passion and one great pleasure for me is feeding wild birds in my garden.

I have lived in the beautiful Suffolk countryside in England for over 3 years now since moving from London. London was so noisy and crowded and seemed to be getting worse by the day so when I moved to the country it was quite a culture shock for me. It is so peaceful and tranquil where I now live and I am very lucky to have a beautiful garden that attracts many species of wild birds. One of the first things I noticed when I moved to this house was that the garden was full of beautiful and melodic bird song.

When I get up in the morning the first job of the day is feeding the wild garden birds. They always seem to be waiting for me to come and feed them and I love to sit and watch them eating.

Don't you think this is clever photography? It looks like a statue but in fact it is really a bird sitting next to a statue. I like it!

New Born Baby Dolls are so amazingly life like. They look so much like a real baby that you want to nurse them, look after them and keep them safe and warm!

New born baby dolls (or reborn baby dolls) are different from ordinary dolls because they look like real babies.. They are often made individually by hand and they can take around a week to be painstakingly made. They are can also be weighted so they feel like a real baby when they are picked up and held.

What is your opinion on New Born Baby Dolls? I find them very fascinating. Some of them are so life like and realistic. It makes you want to give them a cuddle.
