Gmail adds 'Undo Send' button to cure your email anxiety

Google
GMail is formalizing a solution to your email nightmares: the “Undo Send” button.
If you forward co-worker gossip to the whole office, or deliver a love letter to your boss instead of your girlfriend, the goof-ups can be reversed. Gmail users can now retrieve their “oops” emails by putting a delay on all outgoing messages by at least five seconds. The truly paranoid can add a 30-second lag.
Gmail users already worried over such possible snafus know that the undo option is not new; users could install it via Gmail Labs, an experimental section of Gmail, as early as 2009. The Google crew recognized its popularity and gave it an upgrade Monday, making some observers ask: What took so long?
To turn it on, click “Settings” under the gear icon, and choose your cancellation time period. Users who had already opted for the function under Google Labs will have their preferences turned on by default.

Feeling sad and tired? Watch Grumpy Cat, say scientists

Grumpy Cat
If you get that warm, fuzzy feeling after watching cat videos online, the effect may be more important than you think.
The Internet phenomenon of watching cat videos, from Lil Bub to Grumpy Cat, does more than simply entertain; it boosts viewers' energy and positive emotions and decreases negative feelings, according to a new study by an Indiana University Media School researcher.
The study, by assistant professor Jessica Gall Myrick, surveyed almost 7,000 people about their viewing of cat videos and how it affects their moods.
"Some people may think watching online cat videos isn't a serious enough topic for academic research, but the fact is that it's one of the most popular uses of the Internet today," Dr Myrick said.
“If we want to better understand the effects the Internet may have on us as individuals and on society, then researchers can't ignore Internet cats anymore.
"We all have watched a cat video online, but there is really little empirical work done on why so many of us do this, or what effects it might have on us. I felt compelled to gather some data about this pop culture phenomenon."
Internet data show there were more than two million cat videos posted on YouTube in 2014, with almost 26 billion views. Cat videos had more views per video than any other category of YouTube content.
In Dr Myrick's study, the most popular sites for viewing cat videos were Facebook, YouTube, Buzzfeed and I Can Has Cheezburger.
Study participants were more energetic and felt more positive after watching cat-related online media than before.
They also had fewer negative emotions, such as anxiety, annoyance and sadness, after watching cat-related online media than before.
And crucially the pleasure they got from watching cat videos outweighed any guilt they felt about procrastinating.
"Even if they are watching cat videos on YouTube to procrastinate or while they should be working, the emotional pay-off may actually help people take on tough tasks afterward," Myrick said.
The results also suggest that future work could explore how online cat videos might be used as a form of low-cost pet therapy, she said.

The Health Benefits of Silence

The Health Benefits of Silence – Simple Yet Profound

By Dr Paul Haider
silence_OMTimesThere’s a lot of great science showing that silence is very beneficial to your health.
Noise and especially noise over 30 decibels is associated with high blood pressure, anxiety, and stress. Lots of people get out of bed, take a shower, have coffee and put on the news and starts the cycle of stress for the day.
Silence lowers blood pressure and allows you to deal with life’s challenges in a better way.
Silence is like plugging in your phone… your mind needs to recharge too… and it does more recharging in silence than it does during sleep.
Silence is important if it’s inside or outside, sometimes you have more chatter going on inside than you have noise outside. Close the door… take a few deep breaths… and sit some where for a while and just watch the chatter slow down.
Silence allows you to find yourself in the midsts of all the crazy running around. Especially if you are a busy person, sometimes you get the feeling you are more of a human doing… than a human being… and silence will help you feel human again.
Silence boosts your immune system… making it easier for your body to fight of invading bacteria and other pathogens.
Silence makes you happy, spending time in silence boosts your brain chemistry… and as a great side effect you’re able to focus better too!
Silence makes you look and feel younger and at the same time have a lot more energy.
Silence reduces stress (lowers blood cortisol levels and adrenaline levels) which is the biggest killer in the world… adding 30 minutes of silence a day can change your life.
Silence allows for good hormone regulation and interaction of all the hormone related systems in your body.
Silence keeps plaques from forming in arteries… and thus helping to prevent cardiovascular disease and strokes.
Silence reduces pain, and also helps your brain to become more interactive, thus you work with more of your brain… leading to higher cognitive abilities.
Silence makes you much more capable of deal with emotional issues… and also reduces loneliness.
Just a little bit of silence will do your body, mind, and spirit good!

10 Things You Need To Remember If You Love Someone With Anxiety

1. They’re cool as heck.

People with anxiety are still people, just like you and me. They’re still pretty awesome people. No need to treat them any differently.

2. It’s not a limitation.

Their anxiety isn’t necessarily ideal, but it’s also not to be seen as a limitation.

3. Sometimes they flee.

Like introverts, there are times that people with anxiety need to flee from you and the world as a whole. They need time to recharge and center themselves.

4. Sometimes they ignore you.

But don’t take it personally. People with anxiety aren’t always up for interacting with you or anyone else. They need their alone time to deal.

5. Change can be hard.

Any change, big or small, can be difficult for a person with anxiety to manage. If you’re going through a large change, like a move for example, be conscious of the fact that it may effect the person you love with anxiety in some profound and sometimes undetectable ways.

6. Your companionship is important.

They may not always be social butterflies and they may need time away from you, but your companionship is important to them. However…

7. They don’t need you to worry if they’re panicking.

While you’re companionship is important, they don’t need your worry. Chances are, the person you love with anxiety has found ways to cope on their own, and it probably doesn’t involve you fretting over them.

8. They know their anxiety is sometimes irrational.

But it doesn’t make it any less real. They definitely don’t need you to tell them that they’re getting worked up over nothing. They probably know.

9. They get overwhelmed easily.

So when the person you love with anxiety needs to withdraw, let them. It’ll only be temporary.

10. They’re more than the sum of their anxiety.

It’s important to remember that you don’t love an anxious person, you love someone with anxiety. They’re more than their anxiety.
